EPL 2/1/2008 - Liverpool vs Wigan

I'm not sure why I am even writing about this match. It's a no-contest. Liverpool to romp home comfortably by 2 to 3 goals. I could see Wigan scoring one to make the contest a little edgier and for the media to feast on something. "Liverpool scrambles to poor home win". "Liverpool scores 4 as they flatter to deceive". So on and so forth.

The truth is, if they struggle again (and they're expected to), Benitez should shut up shop and leave before he gets the sack. His main excuse has always been he does not have the players, there are not enough funds to get the good ones etc. Then why spend any more money on average players? Save them pounds and shoot for the biggies! Or better still - get some proper scouts! Every player he has bought, save for Torres, Alonso and Mascherano, have become bit part players, always leading to his rotation policy as an excuse for not making them first choices. If his rotational policy was so crucial, why are we seeing Gerrard playing so many games? And Mascherano?

Average players will get you third or fourth, with some tactical prowess that Benitez does possess to a certain degree. But screw the team concept - Manchester United has a team, but they have that 2-3 classy ball players to push them one step higher. And not just bulldogs mind you. Players who can get past others and spot openings.

Getting off-topic. Tonight, a clear Liverpool win. 3-1 or 4-1 I suppose. Heskey to score a gem for Wigan, the ball coming off his knee while on his bum.
